Verse 2

ॐ जयन्ती मङ्गला काली भद्रकाली कपालिनी
दुर्गा शिवा क्षमाधात्री स्वाहा स्वधा नमोऽस्तु ते ॥२॥
  • मार्कण्डेयः उवाच = Markandeya said
  • ॐ = Om
  • जयन्ती = The victorious one
  • मङ्गला = The auspicious one
  • काली = Kali
  • भद्र-काली = the protectoress Kali
  • कपालिनी = (fem.) furnished with skulls
  • दुर्गा = Durga
  • शिवा = Shiva's (शिव) consort
  • क्षमा-धात्री = mother of forgiveness
  • स्वाहा = hail! hail to! may a blessing rest on!
  • स्वधा = exclamation or benediction used on during the oblation or libation to the gods or departed ancestors
  • नमः = salutation
  • अस्तु = let it be
  • ते = to you
Salutations to Jayanti (Who is Ever-Victorious), Mangala (Who is the bestower of Auspiciousness), Kali (Who is beyond Kala or Time), Bhadrakali (Who is the controller of Life and Death, being beyond Kala or Time), Kapalini (Who wear a Garland of Skulls),
Salutations to Durga (Who is Durgati-Nashini), Shiva (Who is Ever-Auspicious and One with Shiva as His Consort), Kshama (Who is an embodiment of Forbearance), Dhatri (Who is the Supporter of all Beings), Swaha (Who is the final receiver of the Sacrificial Oblations to Gods) and Swadha (Who is the final receiver of the Sacrificial Oblations to Manes); Salutations to You.

विद्यावन्तं यशस्वन्तं लक्ष्मीवन्तञ्च मां कुरु । रूपं देहि जयं देहि यशो देहि द्विषो जहि ॥१७॥ विद्या-वन्तम् = education-endowed यशस्-वन्तम् = glory-endowed लक्ष्मी-वन्तम् = wealth-endowed च = and  माम् = me (acc.) कुरु = do रूपं देहि जयं देहि यशो देहि द्विषो जहि = Please Grant me (Spiritual) Victory, Please Grant me (Spiritual) Glory and Please Destroy my (Inner) Enemies. O Devi, Please Make me Full with Knowledge, Please Make me Full with Glory and Please Make me Full with the attributes of Lakshmi (Beauty and Prosperity). O Devi, Please Grant me (Spiritual) Beauty, Please Grant me (Spiritual) Victory, Please Grant me (Spiritual) Glory and Please Destroy my (Inner) Enemies.

 देवि प्रचण्डदोर्दण्डदैत्यदर्पनिषूदिनि । रूपं देहि जयं देहि यशो देहि द्विषो जहि ॥१८॥ देवि =  oh goddess प्रचण्ड-दोर्दण्ड-दैत्य-दर्प-निषूदिनि = oh strong-"long arm"-demon-pride-destroyer(sing. vocative case fem. of निषूदिन्) => oh Destroyer of the Mighty Pride of the Excessively Violent and Powerful Demons. रूपं देहि जयं देहि यशो देहि द्विषो जहि = Please Grant me (Spiritual) Beauty, Please Grant me (Spiritual) Victory, Please Grant me (Spiritual) Glory and Please Destroy my (Inner) Enemies. Salutations to Devi Durga, Who Destroys the Mighty Pride of the Excessively Violent and Powerful Demons.
